I'm so pleased that Brown Girl, Brown Girl

is a recommended read by The CROWN Act!!

The CROWN Act is a movement created in 2019 by Black women leaders in partnership with Dove and CROWNCoalition (an alliance of companies and organizations that support the work of the CROWN Act. They're on a mission to end race-based hair discrimination nationwide.

So far the CROWN Act, or legislation inspired by it, has been passed in 19 US states to prevent race-based hair discrimination in the school system, the workplace, and the housing sector based on hair textures and hairstyles that are commonly associated with a particular race. The CROWN Act continue to work to get laws passed in the remaining US states and also at the federal level.

I wrote “Brown Girl, Brown Girl” to engage, educate, and empower young girls of color to know that they are beautiful, intelligent, and powerful. Black and brown children are underrepresented in literature and I write because I want them to know that they are seen, their voices matter, and their stories matter.

I'm proud to be a part of the CROWN community and I will continue to do my part to “Pass The CROWN.”
